David A Stubbs II Can learning be fun?

Children aren’t simply small adults. That goes without saying, doesn’t it? That’s why they don’t just need smaller furniture for living and learning on, but also completely different rooms. At least, that’s what architect, designer and consultant  David A Stubbs II thinks.
The American has worked in and for state schools for many years, becoming a  specialist in the next generation of learning environments. As our design partner, he develops pieces of furniture that make classrooms into spaces for experiences – while still being fun. Why? Because lively little people need versatile, inspiring and robust spaces to be able to develop.

But David A Stubbs II is not just concerned with the design: Intelligent technology and flexible furniture practically invite the children to try out new forms of learning, move tables, create islands – and even build tents. Are you getting a little bit jealous? We certainly are.

David A Stubbs II has won many awards for his work, gives presentations and advises educational establishments. He is a member of the design team of Reimagine America’s Schools, an initiative of the National Design Alliance. His children's book ‘P.B. Disrupts School!’ is about schools as places of acceptance and inclusion. The Shift+ furniture system is the first cooperation between David A Stubbs II and VS.

Keep moving!

German, maths, biology – a board, a teacher's desk, row upon row of pupils’ desks. It doesn’t sound very inspiring, does it? For decades, David A Stubbs II has been focusing on how classrooms can be made into good learning environments with maximum flexibility.

His passion: To make schools better for more creativity, health, well-being and safety.
How to get there: Furniture that harnesses all of the possibilities of space.
The solution: the Shift+ system.

Shift+ elements are light and mobile. They are not tied to a specific room, but can be moved around throughout the whole building – wherever they are needed With Shift+, even IT workstations and storage elements can be moved around. After all, the word for furniture in many languages (e.g., “Mobiliar” in German), contains the concept of “mobile”. And we interpret that literally.
With Shift+, schools don’t need any furniture movers, because teachers and pupils can reconfigure their classroom themselves in a flash. The classroom becomes a room with many possibilities and new perspectives. Made of a generation of young explorers that crosses boundaries and learns with every sense. Developed by a designer who is familiar with the joys of creativity, and is keen to pass them on.

Furniture for the schools of today

Here today, there tomorrow: The Shift+ elements from David A Stubbs II and VS are as versatile as an inspiring school day. Grey monotony? There’s no such thing because Shift+ demands that you keep moving and keep discovering new possibilities. In this way, the learning environment adapts afresh to the needs of learners and teachers every day. Whether individual or group work, the Shift+ desks are up for anything, form islands and even snake their way through the room if you want.

This is much more than a gimmick. David A Stubbs II – and we – believe that  to be fit for the demands of the 21st century, children need different schools and teaching methods from the past. And learning and the learning environment are closely connected: children need rooms that give them freedom and don’t put any limits on their development.

Children are spending more time at school and take part in all manner of activities there. At the same time, the variety of needs is rising in the wake of inclusion and integration efforts. Schoolrooms therefore have to be adaptable and multifunctional.

For this reason, Shift+ by David A Stubbs II doesn’t just include desks, stools and chairs, but also storage space, seating and play modules. Even platforms and tent elements for ground-level learning are part of the range.

For younger children in particular, touching and movement are part of learning. This requires furniture made of elements that can be combined in many ways.

For example, learning corners or open areas can be created, along with spaces for individual retreat or spaces for joint activities. So exactly what children love and need.

Stefan Behnisch

Aesthetic, functional, yet uncompromisingly sustainable: the name of architect Stefan Behnisch is a byword for architecture that conserves resources and makes people feel comfortable. What is less well-known is the fact that he has also created furniture systems that are so timelessly appealing and flexible that they last for decades - whether in the German Bundestag or on the other side of the Atlantic.

The engineer Jürgen Greubel is known for his linear and restrained design. Our design partner creates products with function to the fore. Today, his creations are collectors’ pieces; his focus is on electrically powered utilitarian objects. With VS he creates table systems that can be intelligently incorporated into modern offices and conference rooms. At the same time, they can be individually adapted to your needs. Can you build freedom? Günter Behnisch (1922-2010), a long-standing partner and architect of our company headquarters, could. His Olympic Park in Munich (1972) still represents the spirit of the new Federal Republic. Many other buildings still appear as light, young and carefree as when they were built. That is also true of the furniture designs that we owe to Günter Behnisch.
