Furniture Castors from VS Here’s where we start moving

Flexible room concepts need mobile furniture – and that usually has furniture castors. This is true for chairs and tables as it is for shelves, cabinets, office containers or room dividers. But what has to be considered so that everything rolls, brakes and steers as it should?

Castors for Chairs

All castors for chairs swivel and brake depending on a load. These brakes work only if nobody is sitting on the chair. An unoccupied chair cannot therefore roll across the room accidentally. Once you have sat on the chair, the castors roll without a brake.

Above a seat height of 65 centimetres, sit-stop castors braked by a load are used. When someone is sitting on it, the chair cannot be moved at all. This prevents it from accidentally rolling away when standing up or sitting down. Another safety aspect: When sitting on high chairs, the feet are not on the floor, but rest on the foot ring. Without a sit-stop brake, the chair could move uncontrollably.

Castors for Cupboards, Shelves, Mobile Containers

For these furniture items, too, there is only one castor type, which is suitable for all floor coverings. Sometimes, special heavy-duty castors with a larger diameter are used. For example, this is the case in the Shift+ Landscape range. The bigger the castor diameter, the quieter the castors and the better they roll over obstacles, for example over thresholds.

For cabinets, shelves and containers we only use swivel castors, at least two of which are lockable.

Castors for Tables

Castors for tables are available in various diameters, depending on the table model. We use swivel castors on all tables with three or four castors. Of these, at least two are lockable.

If a table has two legs with gliders as well the legs with castors, that is sufficient to keep the furniture securely in place in the working position.

The locking brake is activated with the foot. The running surface of table castors is identical for all floor coverings.

Which chair castors for which floors?

Soft castors

... have a softer plastic ring on the outside in a contrasting colour.

Hard castors

... are made of a uniform, usually black, plastic body.

Which castors are used depends on the flooring on which the chairs are to be used. Carpets need castors with a hard running surface, otherwise the roll resistance would be too high. If the floor covering is hard (stone, wood, tiles, laminate, etc.) or elastic (linoleum, vinyl), the running surface on the castors must be soft. Otherwise the roll resistance would be too low. The following table gives an overview:

Since the place where a chair is used can change, the castors on our chairs can be replaced.
