Working by the Pool is a “Workation” Relaxing for Everyone?

Working where other people go on holiday – that’s very popular with the younger generation in particular. Just under a quarter of 18- to 24-year-olds, according to a representative YouGov poll, would love to move their home office to a holiday destination for a time. By contrast, the ideas of a “workation”, in other words the combination of work and vacation, resonates with only five percent of over 55-year-olds.

But anyone expecting relaxation when working under palm trees could be disappointed. At least, that’s what the international vacation deprivation study from Expedia in 2022 suggested. Just under three quarters of those surveyed, who had moved their place of work to a beach or the mountains for a time in 2021 said that a workation cannot be compared to a holiday. 59 percent did not feel refreshed. Just under half said that they couldn’t let go of work after the end of the working day. Workation is just a holiday from your workplace – but not from work.
