‘Teachers have three months off!’ Few statements are as persistent as this one. In fact, there are around 12 weeks of school holidays in the German calendar. But a look behind the scenes reveals that most of this time is anything but a holiday.

Corrections left undone

During the holidays, many teachers correct assignments, tests and projects – things they don't have time for during the school year. The tasks pile up, especially in exam subjects.

Preparing for the new school year

Teaching does not take place in the classroom, but at the desk. New series, digital materials, excursions, revised curricula – all of this takes time. The holidays provide it.

Further training and school development

Schools are under pressure: digitalisation, inclusion, new forms of learning, teamwork. Many further training courses therefore take place during the holidays – so that lessons can continue as normal when school starts.

Conferences and organisational tasks: Shortly before and after the holidays, there are often subject conferences, staff meetings, parent communications or school development workshops – all tasks that must be completed to ensure a smooth start to the new term.

Recreation is part of it

Despite everything, there is still time to catch your breath. That is necessary. Everyday school life is demanding, whether academically, organisationally or emotionally. It is not possible without breaks and doing something completely different.
