Artificial intelligence has long since become part of everyday school life. 74 per cent of young people aged between 12 and 19 use AI applications to help with their homework or for studying. This is the finding of the 2025 JIM Study. This baseline study on young people’s media use is carried out by the Media Education Research Network South-West.

AI as a learning aid

AI is mainly used for homework and studying. This was reported by 74 per cent of respondents, compared with 65 per cent in 2024. 70 per cent of young people use it to search for information; last year, the figure was 53 per cent. 54 per cent use it to have something explained to them. Overall, 91 per cent of respondents report using at least one AI application in general (2024: 62 per cent). More than half (57 per cent) consider the information provided to be trustworthy.

Age and type of school as influencing factors

There were few differences between boys and girls, but there were differences between age groups. 12- to 15-year-olds use AI less frequently for learning, but more frequently for entertainment, than 16- to 19-year-olds.

Differences are also evident depending on the type of school. Young people at grammar schools use AI more in knowledge-based subjects than pupils attending secondary modern schools or lower secondary schools.

AI is therefore increasingly becoming a tool that complements learning and research. According to the survey, only traditional search engines were used more frequently than ChatGPT as a research and information tool.
