On May 23, Germany celebrates the anniversary of its Basic Law. Since 1949, it has formed the foundation of the free democratic basic order—and has thus stood for stability, human dignity, and the rule of law for 77 years.

77th anniversary of the Basic Law

The Basic Law, the constitution that protects the rights of all people in Germany, is 77 years old. It guarantees freedom of expression, equal rights, and the right to education.

Challenges for democracy

The Basic Law is more than just a constitution. It is a protective space for freedom and, at the same time, a mandate for both politicians and citizens. Current survey data highlight the current challenges posed by uncertainties in the German economy and the rise of right-wing extremist parties. According to Tagesschau, satisfaction with democracy in Germany is at 60% nationwide. In the east, it is lower, but has risen from 43% (2023) to 51% (2025). These figures highlight the importance of political education and awareness.

Education  is the key to strengthening our democracy.”

How did it all begin?

After the experiences of dictatorship, the Basic Law was created in 1949 as a deliberate counter-concept: with strong fundamental rights, clear mechanisms for the separation of powers, and the aim of preventing abuse of power. Today, it is clear that this constitution is enduring and must be actively protected. Especially in structurally weak areas, where many people have experienced significant negative changes in recent years, there is a lack of trust in democratic processes.

How democracy shapes our everyday lives

Democracy is not only evident in elections, but in all areas of our everyday lives. In schools, it is taught through political education and media literacy; in society, it is practiced through freedom of expression in exchanges with fellow citizens and civic engagement; and in politics, it is safeguarded by the separation of powers and the rule of law.

A look at the big picture

77 years of the Basic Law represent not only a success story, but also a task. The high level of support for democracy shows strength, while the lower level of satisfaction with its implementation shows that there is a need for action. This makes it all the more important to teach young people to recognize disinformation and actively defend democratic values.
