Homework, studying, presentations without digital media? That's hard to imagine today. Almost 80 percent of schoolchildren in Germany regularly use digital educational resources. These tools are particularly popular for research (82%), completing assignments (71%) and deepening knowledge (65%).

YouTube instead of textbooks

The three most popular resources for learning among students are YouTube (61%), Wikipedia (60%) and social media (51%). They appreciate that these resources are free and easy to use, and that they provide detailed explanations, cite sources and offer different perspectives. Online materials from school textbooks (48%) and learning apps (45%) are also popular. However, the media libraries of public broadcasters and the federal and state centres for political education are only used by around a quarter of pupils.

Big differences depending on school type

The proportion of users varies according to school type: It is 86 per cent at grammar schools, 72 per cent at secondary schools, and 67 per cent at secondary modern schools. There are also differences in the technical equipment available. The most commonly used items are tablets, projectors and whiteboards, but more than a third of pupils use smartphones in class for private purposes.
